|
The Joss LS85-4E is part of the Legacy Series — a collection rooted in the original designs Dan Janes created between 1983 and 1991, revived to honor the vision and craftsmanship that defined an era of American cue making.
The forearm is highly figured curly maple finished with a hand-rubbed nutmeg stain, a technique that draws out the depth and movement of the grain rather than masking it. As light shifts across the surface, the figure comes alive — warm, rich, and immediately distinctive.
The butt sleeve is where the LS85-4E makes its most striking statement. An ebony sleeve serves as the canvas for a series of precisely executed geometric stairstep inlays and rings in unstained maple — the natural, unaltered maple creating a bold contrast against the dark ebony. The pattern is intricate and architectural, a design that rewards a closer look and reflects the kind of detail work that sets a handcrafted cue apart from anything produced at volume.
The grip is finished with a white Irish linen wrap with black specks, hand-pressed to perfection — a classic choice that complements the warmth of the nutmeg forearm and the bold contrast of the ebony sleeve.
The LS85-4E features Joss's signature hand-polished stainless steel joint, delivering the crisp, solid feedback the brand is renowned for. The full-length core running from butt plate to joint ensures a one-piece feel, superior shot consistency, and long-term warp resistance.
The Legacy Series exists because of Dan Janes. Dan co-founded Joss Cues in 1968 alongside his good friend Bill Stroud — the word "Joss" meaning luck — and by 1972 had taken full ownership and built the brand into one of the most respected names in American cue making. He was a pioneering force in the industry: standardizing joint sizes for shaft interchangeability, transitioning from V-groove points and pantograph work into CNC-machined precision, and developing unique handle-joining techniques in some of his "hustler" style cues. He was inducted into the American Cuemakers Association Hall of Fame in 2003, the International Cuemakers Hall of Fame in 2012, and received the ACA's Lifetime Achievement Award in 2022. Dan passed away on June 20, 2023.
The LS85-4E is built today by his son Stephen Janes in Towson, Maryland — carrying forward every standard his father set. Stephen learned cue making directly under Dan over more than four decades and was recognized as ACA Cuemaker of the Year in 2017. In Stephen's hands, the Legacy Series is exactly what its name promises.
