| Joss 20-01 Pool Cue - Specifications | |
|
The Joss 20-01 is a cue that lets the wood do the talking. Built around one of nature's most visually striking timbers, it delivers a bold, organic aesthetic grounded in decades of American craftsmanship.
The forearm features four lacewood points set against natural, unstained hard rock maple — allowing the contrast between the lacewood's distinctive flecked grain and the clean maple to speak for itself. Lacewood, sourced from South America, is immediately recognizable for its pronounced ray-fleck pattern that resembles a mosaic of tiny lenses, and no two pieces are ever quite alike. The points are precise and cleanly executed, letting the wood's natural character serve as the design.
The rear butt sleeve continues the theme, with matching rectangular lacewood panels that echo the forearm points and create a cohesive, unified look from grip to butt. The natural variation in lacewood grain means every 20-01 is subtly one of a kind.
The grip is wrapped in traditional black Irish linen with white spots, hand-pressed to perfection — a classic choice that provides a secure, consistent feel and a time-honored look that complements the warmth of the lacewood.
The 20-01 features Joss's signature hand-polished stainless steel joint, delivering the crisp, solid feedback the brand is renowned for. The full-length core running from butt plate to joint ensures a one-piece feel, superior shot consistency, and long-term warp resistance.
Joss Cues Heritage & Craftsmanship
Joss Cues® has been handcrafting cues in Towson, Maryland since 1968, when Dan Janes and his good friend Bill Stroud founded the company — the word "Joss" meaning luck. In 1972, Dan bought Bill out and built Joss into one of the most recognized American cue brands. Dan was a pioneering force in the industry: he standardized joint sizes so shafts could be interchangeable, transitioned from V-groove points and pantograph work into CNC-machined precision, and developed unique handle-joining techniques in some of his "hustler" style cues. He was inducted into the American Cuemakers Association Hall of Fame in 2003, the International Cuemakers Hall of Fame in 2012, and received the ACA's Lifetime Achievement Award in 2022. Dan passed away on June 20, 2023.
Today, his son Stephen Janes carries that legacy forward with the same integrity, precision, and playability-first standards Dan instilled. Stephen learned cue making directly under his father over more than four decades, and was recognized as ACA Cuemaker of the Year in 2017. Every Joss cue that leaves Towson today reflects the unbroken line of craftsmanship Dan began over fifty years ago.
